Your holiday will start at Dubai International Airport where you will find a huge range of duty free shops. The airport is just 4km from the city centre. The public bus service covers most areas of the city, taxis are cheap and plentiful, or you may choose to hire a car. Rented cars are cheap and there is very little paperwork. However, driving in Dubai can be quite stressful because of the confusing road names and the morning and evening rush hours mean that even a short trip can take a disproportionate amount of time. Also, parking in some parts of the city is difficult to find. If you prefer not to drive yourself you will find that some companies hire out a driver with the car. Modern luxurious hotels are plentiful and you will find help in choosing accommodation by using the drop down box on this page which will lead you to useful information about available hotels.
Enjoy browsing around the shops looking at the amazing range of goods available to purchase, from Persian carpets and electronics to clothing and jewellery. You will get a lot for your money – and remember it’s all duty free! The markets, known as souks, are not to be missed. Wander along the lanes of the spice souk and breathe in the heady scent of incense, dried fruit and nuts, cloves and other spices. The Gold souk is a dazzling experience. It is located at the mouth of the creek and there you will find gold for sale in vast quantities.
Take a trip in a water taxi across the creek. These small wooden motorboats cross the creek every few minutes. There are many striking buildings in Dubai. Al Fahidi Fort is well worth a visit. Having once been a palace, a garrison and a prison, it now houses the Dubai Museum. The spectacular exhibits include a portrayal of the underwater world of pearl diving. You can see what life was like in the days before oil. Life size figures, complete with lighting and sound effects, are on display, as are artefacts and objects found in the ancient graves at Al Ghusais.
