Moorish reminders all over Málaga

Moorish fortress and castle

When you visit Málaga, you will see plenty of evidence of the Muslims who once ruled the city. Málaga has always been an important gateway to the rest of Spain, and the city’s main attractions often find their origin in period of Arab rule. Alcazaba, a fortress built in the eleventh century to defend the Moorish rulers of the city is just one example, and is well worth a visit. While you’re there visit the Gibralfaro Castle as well, you’ll find there is a path besides the wall that connects the two. In the city centre proudly stands the cathedral, la Manquita. The cathedral combines several different styles. The name Manquita, which means one-armed, was given because only one tower was ever finished.

Festive Málaga Feria

Andalusians certainly know how to party, and here they celebrate the Málaga Feria in August. This weeklong festival overflows with music and dancing, and being a traditionally catholic region the Feria also includes several wonderful processions. Of course, during such a party you’ll find plenty of opportunities for great food and drinks. Take a look at the hotels on this website, and grab yourself a bargain room rate. Book early during the festival week as things can get very busy during the Feria. The Málagan people don’t necessarily need the Feria to have a good night out, and you will find the city harbours a variety of choices. Whether it’s live music or a nice quiet drink you want, Málaga has got everything from wine (tasting) bars to trendy nightclubs. The place to be is the area around the plaza de la Constitución.

Proud of the port

In the maze that is the heart of the city you’ll find numerous tapas bars and restaurants. Fish is an important ingredient of Malagan dishes, and here it is taken fresh out of sea. During the Industrial Revolution Málaga’s port played a very important role in Spain’s development. The importance of the port is still evident today. Many tourists holidaying in the famous Costa del Sol travel through Málaga, and the city opens up all kinds of opportunities. It’s not too far from some of the finest golf courses in Spain, and there are several national parks nearby.
