Albufeira used to be a small and quiet fishing town, tucked away in the south of Portugal, where mainland meets sea. The main source of income for its inhabitants was whatever the sea gave them. Nowadays life in Albufeira is quite different, and tourism is the main source of income. Modern tourism has changed the face of Albufeira, and not necessarily for the worse. The old town has transformed into a vivid potpourri of bars, shops and restaurants. Outside of the old centre, great white buildings arose, to host the millions of tourists that come here every summer.
The winter is also a popular time to visit, and thousands of people take advantage of the favourable conditions at this time of year. People from all over Europe come to escape the cold winters in their own country. During the winter the facilities are less numerous, but you will still find plenty on offer. There are several great resort hotels to choose from, including hotel apartments. Browse through the available hotels on this website and you look out for the low Internet prices. The beach is of course one of the main reasons people come here, but the old centre is worth a good look too. Today you will find it filled with shops and restaurants, but there is more. The locals certainly know their way around, so don’t be afraid to ask directions.
The summer visitors to Albufeira usually come to enjoy the beach in the day, and party through the night, which is certainly possible here. The tourist emphasis has ensured there are plenty of international restaurants and bars. When it comes to restaurants you can find dishes from across Europe and the world. Look out for local dishes such as the chicken Piri Piri, Portuguese spicy chicken. Albufeira’s coastal location is apparent in much of the food, and you can easily find restaurants serving a variety of fish and squid.
If you don’t feel like sunbathing of swimming, a drive along the coast is a nice way to see the sights of the surrounding areas. Places like Carveiro and Lagos are certainly worth the trip.
