If you arrive by train, the sense of the city of Bologna becomes clear immediately. It’s a busy city, and the classical buildings capture your attention straight away. From the station, just walk with the crowd and you’ll find your way into the city. As you follow the crowds from the station to the city centre, the chances are you will be led into the shopping street, the Via dell Indipendenza, with its long shop filled galleries on either side. If you want to eat just have a look around in the streets behind the Via dell Indipendenza where you will find the cosiest restaurants in Bologna.
If you managed to get to the end of the shopping street new choices are to be made – straight on towards the Piazza Maggiore with all kinds of historic features, or taking a surprising right turn? Pisa may be famous for its Leaning Tower, but Bologna has not one, but two of them. If you take that surprising right you walk straight towards them. The Tower of Asinelli and the tower of Garisenda were both built by rich families in the early twelfth century. During construction the Garisenda already started to sink so they could not finish it, leaving it quite a bit shorter than the Asinelli.
The Piazza Maggiore is where all sorts of historic sights come together. It’s the place to be whether you want to see the San Petronio basilica or one of the Palazzos –the palaces. The Palazzo del Podesta has several architectural treats. If you look closely you’ll see both Renaissance and Corinthian elements. The San Petronio basilica is nice on both the inside and outside. When there, check out the frescos and paintings inside the basilica.
The University of Bologna is said to be the oldest university in Europe. Students from all around the world come to Bologna to attend it. The student population has had its influence on the city, and you’ll find a vivid nightlife – except during school holidays. There’s also a wide range of reasonably priced restaurants serving good food. Bologna is known for its freshly made pastas and of course for its Bolognese sauce.
